Songkran Survival Planner
Water-zone schedule, waterproof checklist, and sun protection by city.
What this solves
Songkran (April 13–15 officially, but parties extend over a week) is Thailand's biggest water-fight festival. Bangkok's Silom Road is the most intense tourist party. Chiang Mai's moat zone is the largest by attendance. Phuket's Patong has its own beach-side version. This planner zones the days and gives a waterproof checklist.
How to read results
The schedule lists recommended days per city and zone. The checklist covers waterproof phone pouch, quick-dry clothes, sunscreen, and valuables protection. The "dry" mode avoids water zones entirely — useful for elderly travelers or those with cameras.
Limitations
- Festival dates are officially April 13–15 but extend over a week in major cities.
- Some zones get foam parties — bring old shoes.
- Water + sun combination is severe — reapply sunscreen every 2 hours even when wet.
FAQ
Can I avoid the water?
Yes — Songkran zones are geographically concentrated. Hotels in non-tourist districts stay dry. Walking through a zone will get you wet regardless of intent.
Is Bangkok or Chiang Mai better for Songkran?
Chiang Mai has the most authentic festival and largest crowd. Bangkok is more commercial / tourist party. Chiang Mai's moat zone fills with 50,000+ people per day.
What shouldn't I bring?
Leather shoes, expensive watches, non-waterproof cameras, white clothes (transparent when wet), important documents. Leave everything in the hotel safe.
