Thai Festival Calendar & Etiquette

Major Thai festivals by month, region, etiquette, and crowd levels.

What this solves

Thailand runs on a solar + Buddhist lunar calendar. Songkran (April) is the biggest water-fight festival, Loy Krathong (November) is the lantern-and-floating festival, Vegetarian Festival (Sep-Oct) is a 9-day Taoist event in Phuket. Each has rules — Songkran zones differ by city, Vegetarian Festival has special "jay" foods, Loy Krathong has release-only rules for krathongs.

How to read results

Each festival includes etiquette (what to wear, do, avoid), crowd level (1–5), and region-specific notes. Songkran Bangkok Silom vs Chiang Mai moat zone behave differently. Vegetarian Festival Phuket includes mah song spirit mediums — important not to photograph them up close.

FAQ

Which Songkran zone is wildest?

Bangkok Silom Road is the biggest tourist party. Chiang Mai moat zone is the largest by attendance (50,000+ per day). Khao San is mid-tier. Phuket Patong has its own beach-side celebration.

Is Vegetarian Festival safe for tourists?

Yes — most of it is cultural and food-focused. The dramatic body-piercing processions (mah song) are real but happen on specific days; spectators are welcome but should not get close to mediums.

Can I release a Loy Krathong anywhere?

Use only the designated zones (parks, rivers). Many cities have removed release areas to protect marine life. Banned krathongs include plastic foam and bread. Banana-leaf krathongs are eco-safe.
